Mining disaster

The light of life breaks through the night: the miner Jose` Henriquez knew that the mine was dangerous. But he and his buddies needed money. So they drove in for shift every morning as usual. But that day was different than any before: On August 5th, 2010 there was a big explosion – the 33 men were cut off from the outside world. Age between 19 and 63 years.

Ever since that moment, there was no longer any certainty. Statement: we felt the earth shake. It was terrible when we 33 men were buried 700 meters below the surface of the earth in a tunnel, hopeless for the rescue team: a wall of rubble, about 800 meters thick, blocked the access. The situation underground was even more desperate. We lived, but at the same time we were buried alive! The collapse of the San Jose mine was one of the worst in Chilean mining history. The shelter was the only place our refuge was. After the rock explosion and the dust subsided, all 33 workers met at this location. Nobody was hurt.

In the shadowy darkness of the mine it was clear to us that God was our only hope, our only source of strength. The 32 men said to Jose, we want you to guide us in prayer. They knew him as a Christian and a witness, a follower of Jesus. Appointment for prayer and God’s word: 12 noon and 6 pm Statement: When we bowed to God in prayer, we felt his presence in our midst. Without a doubt, he was our 34th miner. We asked God to take the whole situation into his hands because there was no one else to hear us. We got consolation from Psalm 91, verses 1-5. God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent!

On the 17th day, when we had eaten the last small ration, we suddenly heard a noise – closer and closer. Then it happened: the drill breaks! Our joy was perfect! The miracle happened! We were finally connected to the outside world! With prayer and a lot of patience, the breakthrough came. Our message was: We are fine in the shelter, we are all alive! After the drilling was successful, our food box was never empty.

From top to bottom, from bottom to top, letters and information went their way. Information, everyone is informed, Christians are praying! We received many gifts, but the most precious thing was that each of us received a Bible with a name stamped on it. Together we could read and exchange ideas.

Then the big event, on October 13th, 2010, 22 pals accepted Christ as their Savior. After 70 days, I was the 24th man to leave the mine. I was very happy, filled with peace, and rejoiced in the Lord. I arrived at the top quiet and happy. The Lord answered our prayers and the salvation went according to plan. I thank God for this and promise to serve him for the rest of my life.

Help in trouble

1. Be people of prayer

For Christians, prayer is as important as the air we breathe. Prayer is the oxygen of the spirit, it renews us.

According to Matthew 11: 28-30, Jesus says: come to me when you are in trouble, I want to help you, I want to refresh you. Prayer is the key that opens the door so that we can talk to God. It is like a telephone line that we have constant connection through Psalm 50:15.

2. Appreciate God’s Word

It is necessary to understand and know the word God.

Because they are not empty words, they are your life. Follow it, and you will stay a long time in the new land across the Jordan that you are now taking. Deuteronomy 32:47 (HFA)

The word of god

• edify us
• educates us, strengthens us
• comforts us
• teaches us how to live and act

Keeping the word in mind and in heart will help us in times of need. In the Word of God we find answers and the mystery of the love with which God looks at us. (Psalm 95: 1-6 LÜ 2017).

Everything is in his hand – from the depths of the earth to the peaks of the highest mountains. Psalm 95.4 (HFA)

Hilfen in Schwierigkeiten

Psalm 95,4 (HFA)
