Susan and her friend
If only I hadn’t made an appointment! For days I had been tormented by a state of deep depression. But we had arranged the meeting long ago. As we sat across from each other over a cup of tea, I began dumping my problems. Suddenly Susan interrupted me and said, „You know, I have an idea. We want to visit the diamond cutting workshop.” I looked at her in amazement, but was happy to go with her.
In the Diamond Mill
We were shown exquisite gemstones and explained to us how they came into being in the depths of the earth. It takes hundreds of thousands of years, intense heat and great pressure to create a diamond.
The rough diamond
When diamonds are dug out of the ground, they initially look no more exciting than an ugly lump of rock. Only an expert can tell what kind of diamond it will be hidden in the nugget. What is behind the great effort to bring a diamond in the rough from the depths of the earth?
A diamond is noble, valuable, precious and very expensive
Comparison diamond and human
Man without God is like a diamond in the rough, a lump of stone.
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3,23 (ESV)
God’s love for all people knows no bounds. He sent his only son to give his life on the cross. He died for us. Jesus came to us on this earth voluntarily. From top to bottom. He came to look for people. To save them from sin and perdition. To serve you.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19,10 (ESV)
Biblical Examples: Diamond in the Rough – Nugget of Stone:
- The woman from Samaria, Jesus says to her: You had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband! According to John 4:1-30.
- Zacchaeus a tax collector a fraud According to Luke 19:1-10.
Jesus meets them, lifts them out of the depths of sin and takes them into his master hands. God’s love is limitless.
The grinding process
A curious experience shows that the uglier a gemstone is in the ungrind state, the more beautiful it becomes in the skillful hands of a grinder.
A careful, precise grinding makes the diamond a treasure.
The parallel: We also repeatedly go through a grinding process. Disappointment, slander, disrespect, lovelessness. We don’t live in an ideal world. This process is painful. Why? Why? Don’t doubt, despair God sees the end result.
The point of the grinding process is to give the gemstone the right shape, to bring out its true color, so that the light can enter the stone clearly and reflect it back just as pure and bright.
It becomes visible when Jesus is in us and we are in him.
Its clarity, truth, purity, kindness shines through us.
Before a diamond has reached its perfect shape, it has to be cut several times. This is exactly how we must go through painful experience. Joy and sorrow is part of our life.
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christs sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. 1. Peter 4,12-14 (ESV)
If we face this grinding process with the right attitude, it will refine us internally. We become able to reflect Christ more brightly.

Susan und ihre Freundin
Hätte ich mich doch nur nicht verabredet! Seit Tagen quälte ich mich durch einen Zustand tiefer Niedergeschlagenheit. Doch wir hatten das Treffen schon lange ausgemacht. Als wir bei einer Tasse Tee gegenübersaßen, fing ich an meine Probleme abzuladen. Plötzlich unterbrach mich Susan und sagte: „Weißt du ich habe eine Idee. Wir wollen einen Besuch in der Diamantenschleiferei machen.“ Ich sah sie verdutzt an, ging dann aber gerne mit.
In der Diamantenschleiferei
Man zeigt uns auserlesene Edelsteine und erklärte uns, wie sie in der Tiefe der Erde entstanden waren. Hunderttausende von Jahren sind nötig, intensive Hitze und großer Druck, bis ein Diamant entsteht.
Der Rohdiamant
Wenn Diamanten aus der Erde geholt werden, sehen sie zunächst nicht aufregender aus als ein unschöner Steinklumpen. Nur ein Experte kann erkennen, was für ein Diamant es sein wird, der in dem Klumpen verborgen ist. Was steht hinter der großen Anstrengung, einen Rohdiamanten aus der Tiefe der Erde zu holen?
Ein Diamant ist edel, wertvoll, kostbar und sehr teuer
Vergleich Diamant und Mensch
Der Mensch ohne Gott gleicht einem Rohdiamanten, einem Steinklumpen.
„Sie sind allesamt Sünder und ermangeln des Ruhmes, den sie vor Gott haben sollen“, Römer 3,23 (LUT)
Gottes Liebe ist zu allen Menschen grenzenlos. Er sandte seinen einzigen Sohn, der sein Leben am Kreuz hingab. Er starb für uns. Freiwillig kam Jesus zu uns auf diese Erde. Von oben – nach unten. Er kam, um die Menschen zu suchen. Sie aus der Sünde und dem Verderben zu retten. Ihnen zu dienen.
„Und der Menschensohn ist gekommen, um zu suchen und zu retten, was verloren ist.« Lukas 19,10 (NGÜ)
Biblische Beispiele: Rohdiamant – Steinklumpen:
- Die Frau aus Samarien, Jesus sagt zu ihr: Fünf Männer hast du gehabt, und den du jetzt hast ist nicht dein Mann! Nach Johannes 4,1-30.
- Zachäus ein Zolleinnehmer ein Betrüger Nach Lukas 19,1-10.
Jesus begegnet ihnen, holt sie aus der Tiefe der Sünde heraus und nahm sie in seine Meisterhände. Gottes Liebe ist grenzenlos.
Der Schleifprozess
Eine eigenartige Erfahrung zeigt: Je hässlicher ein Edelstein in ungeschliffenem Zustand ist, desto schöner wird er unter den geschickten Händen eines Schleifers.
Ein sorgsamer genauer Schliff macht den Diamant zu einer Kostbarkeit.
Die Parallele: Auch wir gehen immer wieder durch einen Schleifprozess. Enttäuschung, Verleumdung, Missachtung, Lieblosigkeit. Wir leben in keiner heilen Welt. Dieser Prozess ist schmerzhaft. Warum? Warum? Nicht zweifeln, verzweifeln Gott hat das Endergebnis vor Augen.
Es geht bei dem Schleifprozess darum, dem Edelstein die richtige Form zu geben, seine eigentliche Farbe hervorzubringen, dass das Licht klar in den Stein hineinfallen kann und es genau so rein und hell wieder reflektieren wird.
Es wird sichtbar, wenn Jesus in uns ist und wir in ihm sind.
Seine Klarheit, Wahrheit, Reinheit, Freundlichkeitleuchten durch uns.
Bis ein Diamant seine vollendete Form erreicht hat, muss er mehrmals geschliffen werden. Genau so müssen wir durch schmerzliche Erfahrung gehen. Freud und Leid ist Teil unseres Lebens.
„Ihr Lieben, lasst euch durch das Feuer nicht befremden, das euch widerfährt zu eurer Versuchung, als widerführe euch etwas Fremdes, sondern freut euch, dass ihr mit Christus leidet, damit ihr auch durch die Offenbarung seiner Herrlichkeit Freude und Wonne haben mögt. Selig seid ihr, wenn ihr geschmäht werdet um des Namens Christi willen, denn der Geist, der ein Geist der Herrlichkeit und Gottes ist, ruht auf euch“. 1. Petrus 4,12-14 (LUT)
Wenn wir diesem Schleifprozess mit der richtigen Haltung begegnen, wird er uns innerlich verfeinern. Wir werden fähig, Christus leuchtender zu reflektieren.
So viel bist du mir wert, dass ich Menschen und ganze Völker aufgebe, um dein Leben zu bewahren. Diesen hohen Preis bezahle ich, weil ich dich liebe. Jesaja 43,4 (HFA)
